Berlin

Berlin is a huge city and the capital of Germany.  Split into East and West Berlin for nearly 50 years, the reunited city has a long way to go before the people living there will again think of themselves as Berliners rather than from the East or West.  Interestingly, many of the classic tourist sights of the city were on the east side of the Berlin Wall.  It was possible for westerners to travel back and forth across the border, but it was a whole other matter for communist citizens to move across the border to the west.  The city has no significant monuments from the Nazi era to prevent people from placing memorials to the brutal regime.
