JapanJapan is a strange place. You hear so
much about it and most hardly know anything about it other
than Tokyo, Godzilla and sushi. It is a country of incredible
social contrast, backing up the ultra-modern cell phone against ancient
shrines. The people here are helpful to a fault - you can go into
an expensive shoe store in Ginza hawking $1,000 pairs of shoes and the
ladies in there will spend 10 minutes just to help you find your way to
Hamarikyu Garden near Tsukiji fish market even if you have absolutely
no intention of purchasing their products for sale.
Travelling through Japan on the large scale from city to city was no problem
at all. Finding specific addresses is another matter. Over the
years, street names and numbers have blended into a cacophony of navigation.
Even the Japanese will download maps and meet their friends at train stations
because it is virtually impossible to find an apartment if you don't know where
you are going already. As long as you are not in a hurry, you'll find this
wandering a very rewarding experience.
