Xi'an

Xi'an is the ancient capital of unified China and near Xi'an is where Emperor Qin resided. His mausoleum is larger than the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt and grandiose even when compared to the mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The Terra-Cotta Warriors are a silent proof of the magnificent efforts of that time. Although the mausoleum has been sacked over the past 2,000 years, its splendor still lives on in the environs in and about Xi'an. Looking at China tour prices on the web in US dollars might scare your wallet, as you will be charged $234 for a regular room at a non-descript hotel with a whirlwind tour of a few locations. In my opinion, you can have a far better experience for less money at the Bell Tower Hotel with a private driver. This way you get to spend all day at the important locations, as apposed to being pushed along by a tour guide. Do it yourself is a bit more challenging, but definitely worth the trouble.
