The Orient is a place of otherworldly sights, peculiar cuisines and ancient practices. Coming from the west makes communication very challenging simply because you cannot begin to decipher the language characters in any Asian country because the character set is completely alien. That doesn't mean that the people are not friendly, though. Making an embarassingly poor attempt to communicate usually elicited a curious look and then the help you needed. If you make an attempt to communicate in any person's native language, they'll appreciate the effort and be much more willing to help you.
